Portrait of Johann Nepomuk Hummel

Johann Nepomuk Hummel

Nov 14, 1778 - Oct 17, 1837

Austria

Johann Nepomuk Hummel was an Austrian composer and a skilled pianist who lived during the time when music was changing from the Classical to the Romantic style. He started learning music early and spent two years living in Vienna at Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s house, where he studied with Mozart himself. As a child, Hummel and his father traveled through several European countries, including Bohemia, Germany, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, and England, where he performed as a young piano prodigy. During his time in England, he also studied for a year with Muzio Clementi. In 1793, Hummel returned to Vienna and continued his music education with teachers such as J.G. Albrechtsberger, Joseph Haydn, whom he had met in London, and Antonio Salieri. He worked as the chapelmaster for the Esterházy family from 1804 to 1811, a role that had been held by Haydn before him. After achieving more success as a pianist, conductor, and teacher, Hummel became chapelmaster at Weimar in 1818. Throughout his career, he kept developing his skills and gaining recognition in music circles. Hummel’s main compositions were his piano works, which included trios, sonatas, rondos, and six concertos. These pieces are known for being elegant and showing his skill through beautiful melodies and decorations. His music was clear, flowing, and matched well with the type of piano used in Vienna at that time. However, his works did not have the same emotional depth or strong unity found in the music of his famous contemporary Ludwig van Beethoven, with whom he shared an uneasy friendship. Hummel was even a pallbearer at Beethoven’s funeral. He also wrote nine operas, three masses, a mandolin concerto, and,,amongst, other, chamber, music, like, the,Septet,in,D,Minor. In addition to composing, Hummel introduced new ways to use piano fingering. He shared these ideas in a teaching book called Klavierschule, or "Piano School," which he published in 1828. This work showed his interest in improving piano technique and helping others learn to play the instrument better.
