Portrait of John Field

John Field

Jul 26, 1782 - Jan 23, 1837

England

John Field was an Irish composer who began learning music at home with his father and grandfather. Later, he studied in London with Muzio Clementi, who taught him in exchange for Field's help as a piano demonstrator and salesman. Through Clementi’s guidance, Field improved rapidly. In 1802, Clementi took him to Paris and then to Germany and Russia. Field soon earned recognition as both a pianist and a composer. By 1803, he settled in Russia, where he became a popular teacher for some time. Field was among the early piano virtuosos and traveled widely, playing throughout Europe for about 30 years. In 1832, he had notable success in London with one of his E flat piano concertos at a Philharmonic Society concert. He is also known for being one of the first to use the sustaining pedal in piano music, applying it both in his compositions and in his performances. His style and technique are said to have anticipated those of Chopin. As a composer, Field’s strength lay in shorter pieces featuring expressive melodies and imaginative, often chromatic harmonies. He wrote seven piano concertos and four sonatas, which show signs of quality but don’t always maintain it consistently. His nocturnes stand out for being concise and intimate, with a distinctive style and a variety of moods. These smaller works are often regarded as some of his most characteristic music.
