Alec Rowley was born on March 13, 1892, in Ealing, West London. He studied music at the Royal Academy of Music, where he learned from well-known teachers. During his career, he won prizes for his compositions and earned fellowships at important music organizations. Rowley worked as a church organist and was also known as a broadcaster. In his personal life, he was married twice, but both marriages ended in separation. He enjoyed playing tennis, and sadly, he died while playing tennis at the age of 65 in 1958. Rowley composed a large number of works throughout his life. Many of his pieces were designed for teaching and for amateur musicians, making them popular among piano students. While he mostly avoided modern styles, he sometimes experimented with newer sounds influenced by French music. His works include orchestral music, like piano concertos, an Oboe Concerto, and a Rhapsody for viola and orchestra. He wrote many songs and choral works as well, both religious and non-religious. A special area of focus for Rowley was solo piano music, with over 250 pieces to his name. These ranged from characterful suites that tell a story to more formal compositions. Besides creating music, he wrote several educational books and worked as a musical adviser for publishers.
