Friedrich Kuhlau was a Danish composer who lived during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. He played an important role in the Danish Golden Age and is remembered in Danish cultural history for his music to Elves' Hill. This composition is known as the first true work of Danish National Romanticism and also serves as a hidden tribute to the absolute monarchy. His version of the melody remains the standard arrangement to this day. During his life, Kuhlau was mainly known as a concert pianist and a composer of Danish opera. He helped introduce many works by Beethoven, whom he greatly admired, to audiences in Copenhagen. This made him a key figure in promoting new music in Denmark. Kuhlau composed a large amount of music. Even though his house caught fire and destroyed all of his unpublished manuscripts, he still left behind more than 200 published works. His compositions cover a wide range of music styles and genres, showing his lasting impact on Danish music.
