Portrait of Octávio Pinto

Octávio Pinto

Nov 3, 1890 - Oct 31, 1950

Brazil

Octávio Pinto was a Brazilian composer and architect. Although he worked mainly as an architect with business across Brazil, he also composed music. Pinto was married to Guiomar Novaes, a leading Brazilian pianist in the twentieth century. His music gained some attention through her performances. Pinto did not pursue music professionally, focusing on his architecture career instead. In his younger years, he studied piano with Isidor Philipp, a well-known Hungarian-French pianist who also taught his wife at the Paris Conservatoire. Pinto wrote several piano pieces before he died in 1950. His most famous work is Scenas Infantis, a set of pieces for solo piano written in 1932 for his wife. Before marrying Guiomar Novaes, Pinto was already known in Latin American music circles. He was also good friends with Heitor Villa-Lobos, one of the most famous Brazilian classical composers of the twentieth century. Through these connections, Pinto had a meaningful place in Brazil’s music scene despite not being a full-time musician.
