Modest Mussorgsky was born in Karevo, Russia, in 1839 into a wealthy family with noble backgrounds. As a child, he learned piano from his mother and showed his skill by playing difficult pieces for family and friends. When he was 13, he entered the Cadet School of the Guards in Saint Petersburg. During this time, he began to struggle with alcoholism, but music continued to play an important role in his life despite these problems. In his late teens, Mussorgsky met important Russian musicians like Alexander Borodin and Alexander Dargomyzhsky. Dargomyzhsky helped him explore music composition, and he also connected with other artists such as César Cui and Mily Balakirev. Balakirev was especially important, guiding him in composition and expanding his understanding of modern music. In 1858, Mussorgsky left the military to focus fully on a musical career. Mussorgsky's most famous work is his opera "Boris Godunov." Though it was first rejected, it eventually gained acceptance and success. He was a member of the group "The Five," known for their dedication to Russian music and realism. Unfortunately, he struggled with alcoholism, personal issues, and money problems throughout his life. Despite help from friends, he found it hard to finish his works and passed away early at 42 in 1881. His creations, including "Pictures at an Exhibition" and "Night on Bald Mountain," have had a lasting effect on Russian music.
