Caroline Butini was born into a wealthy family in Geneva. Her father was a well-known doctor who loved music and encouraged Caroline's interest in it. Although women in her social group were often expected to follow certain paths, Caroline chose to focus on music. She became skilled at playing the piano and composing music. Caroline married Auguste Boissier, who supported her artistic goals. They had two children, Edmond, who became a botanist, and Valérie, who was talented in both music and nursing education. Caroline's music gives us a look into life in early 19th-century Geneva and Switzerland during times of social and cultural change. In 1818, she went to Paris to test her piano skills against professional players. Even with her social position, she worked hard to find the best piano for herself, showing her commitment and understanding of piano making in Paris. She wrote a variety of pieces, including piano concertos, challenging solo works, chamber music, and piano sonatas, highlighting her broad musical abilities. Though many of Caroline's music manuscripts have been lost or are incomplete, they show her strong dedication to music. None of her works were ever published despite agreements with Parisian publishers. Today, her compositions are valuable historical documents, but reading them requires special knowledge of how music was noted in the 19th century. Her works remain an important part of musical history that can teach us much about her time.
