James Hook was an English composer and organist, born in Norwich in 1746. He showed early musical talent, performing in public by age six. After moving to London in the 1760s, he gained recognition as an organist and composer, working at popular venues like White Conduit House and Marylebone Gardens. Hook held several positions, including organist at St. John's in Bermondsey and Vauxhall Gardens, where he composed operas, vocal music, and taught. He collaborated with his family on many projects, including operas for Drury Lane and Covent Garden. His wife and sons contributed librettos to his works. His most notable opera, *Tekeli*, was composed during this period. Hook left Vauxhall Gardens in 1820 and passed away in 1827 in Boulogne, France.
