Sergei Prokofiev was born in a Ukrainian village when it was under Russian control. He was a Russian Soviet composer, pianist, and conductor. Throughout his career, he created many important works in different musical styles. Because of this, he is seen as one of the key composers of the 20th century. His music continues to be well known and played today. Among Prokofiev's well-known pieces are the March from The Love for Three Oranges, the suite Lieutenant Kijé, and the ballet Romeo and Juliet, which includes the famous “Dance of the Knights.” Another popular work is Peter and the Wolf. These pieces show a range of his musical talents and have been enjoyed by audiences worldwide. Prokofiev worked in many musical forms. He completed seven operas and seven symphonies. He also composed eight ballets and five piano concertos. In addition, he wrote two violin concertos, a cello concerto, a special symphony-concerto for cello and orchestra, and nine piano sonatas.
