Portrait of Johann Krieger

Johann Krieger

Dec 28, 1651 - Jul 18, 1735

Germany

Johann Krieger was a German composer and organist, and the younger brother of Johann Philipp Krieger. He was born in Nuremberg and worked in several places, including Bayreuth, Zeitz, and Greiz, before finally settling in Zittau. Krieger was known as one of the most important keyboard composers of his time. His music was highly respected by other musicians, including George Frideric Handel. Although he published many works and others remain in manuscript form, a large number of his compositions were lost when Zittau was destroyed by fire in 1757 during the Seven Years' War. Krieger's keyboard music is considered some of the most important from Germany during that period. He published two collections: Sechs musicalische Partien in 1697 and Anmuthige Clavier-Übung in 1698. These collections included a variety of pieces such as harpsichord suites, organ toccatas, fugues, and ricercars. His contemporary musicians praised Krieger for his skill in counterpoint, especially in his fugues and ricercars. Johann Mattheson admired Krieger's ability in composing double fugues, saying that only Handel might be better in this form. Handel himself admired Krieger’s work and studied it closely. When Handel moved to England, he took a copy of Krieger's Anmuthige Clavier-Übung with him. This shows the respect Handel had for Krieger's music and the importance of his compositions in influencing other composers of that time. Despite the loss of many works, Krieger’s surviving pieces show his talent and contribution to keyboard music.
