Elisabeth Jacquet was born in the middle of the seventeenth century into a family of musicians from Paris. She was known as a child prodigy and had the chance to play harpsichord music for King Louis XIV, also called the Sun King. Her early talent was widely admired, which led to important opportunities at a young age. These performances helped establish her reputation as a skilled musician. As a teenager, Elisabeth became a musician at the French royal court, a role she kept until her marriage to organist Marin de la Guerre in 1684. After getting married, she kept composing music, teaching, and performing concerts around Paris. She stood out because, unlike many women composers of her time, she was well respected and considered one of the best, just below the famous composer Lully according to a historical ranking by Titon du Tillet. Most of Elisabeth's music was written for small groups of instruments, and she was one of the first to support the trio sonata style. She also created two important stage pieces: a ballet called Les jeux à l’honneur de la victoire in 1691, which is now lost, and an opera named Céphale de Procris in 1694. The opera is thought to be the first one written by a woman in France. Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre lived her whole life in Paris and passed away in 1729 when she was 64 years old.
