Domenico Scarlatti

Oct 26, 1685 - Jul 23, 1757

Italy

Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples on October 26, 1685, and passed away in Madrid on July 23, 1757. He was an Italian composer known primarily for his work during the Baroque period. Though he lived in a time mainly associated with Baroque music, his compositions helped influence the later Classical style. He was among the few composers to have a career spanning both the Baroque and Classical periods. Domenico was the son of the famous composer Alessandro Scarlatti. Like his father, he composed music in many different forms. However, today he is best remembered for his 555 keyboard sonatas. These sonatas show his unique style and have been important in the history of keyboard music. He spent a large part of his life working for the royal families of Portugal and Spain. This service allowed him to create much of his music and develop his style. His time at these royal courts gave him opportunities to compose and perform for noble audiences.
