Jean-Joseph Mouret was a French Baroque composer born in 1682. He became known for his dramatic works and held important roles in the French music scene. His most famous piece today is the "Fanfare-Rondeau" from his *Suite de symphonies*, which is widely recognized as the theme for PBS's *Masterpiece*. Mouret found success in Paris, where he worked for the Duchess of Maine and produced operas and court entertainments. He held several prestigious positions, including directing the orchestra at the Opéra and leading the Concert Spirituel. Despite his early accomplishments, his later years were marred by financial struggles. Mouret composed various operas, ballets, and instrumental works, contributing to French opera and ballet. Unfortunately, jealousy and personal difficulties led to his decline, and he died in poverty in 1738 at an asylum. His grave remains unknown.
