George Gershwin

About the composer
George Gershwin grew up in Brooklyn and became one of the most well-known American composers ever. He was famous for his work in musical theatre on Broadway. His music reached many people and gained wide popularity during his lifetime. Gershwin's background and hometown were important parts of who he was as an artist. In addition to musicals, Gershwin wrote orchestral and piano pieces. He mixed styles from classical music with popular and jazz techniques. This blend made his music unique and interesting. His ability to combine different types of music helped him stand out as a composer who could reach many listeners. George often worked with his younger brother, Ira Gershwin. Together, they created numerous songs, orchestral works, and musicals that were enjoyed by many. Among all his creations, George’s best-known piece is “Rhapsody in Blue,” a work for piano and orchestra that remains popular today. This composition shows his skill in mixing musical styles and forms.
