Allegretto Op.72 No.3

Felix Mendelssohn

About the composer
Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, conductor, and teacher. He was one of the most well-known figures during the early Romantic period. His music mostly followed Classical traditions but also introduced important ideas that helped shape Romantic music. Mendelssohn's work bridged these two musical styles in a unique way. Mendelssohn’s interest in the music of Bach influenced him deeply. He enjoyed complex musical lines called counterpoint, which he learned from Bach’s music. In 1829, Mendelssohn conducted a famous performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. This event helped bring Bach’s music to a wider audience, moving it beyond a small group of experts and inspiring many more people. Some of Mendelssohn's best-known pieces include the Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Italian Symphony, a violin concerto, and two piano concertos. These works remain popular today and show his ability to mix Classical forms with Romantic expression. Mendelssohn’s contributions to music have kept his name recognized long after his time.
