This piece is a piano transcription of the wonderful aria from Bizet's opera "Les pêcheurs de perles." Although the public received the work well, the press reacted negatively and showed disinterest towards Bizet's composition. However, in contemporary critical analysis, this aria has gained appreciation and is now regarded as one of Bizet's most renowned works.
