Sergei Eduardovich Bortkiewicz was born on February 28, 1877, in Kharkiv, Ukraine. His early music education took place at the Kharkov Music School, which his mother helped to found. This school was connected to the Imperial Russian Music Society. There, he studied piano with Albert Bensch. His early musical influences included Anton Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky, who both visited the school and participated in concerts. Bortkiewicz viewed himself as a romantic composer who valued melody highly. He disliked modern, atonal music, describing it as "cacophonous." From his earliest works around 1906, his style showed key features that remained consistent throughout his life. Over time, his music became more personal, poetic, and nostalgic. His training with teachers such as van Ark, Liadov, Jadassohn, Piutti, and Reisenauer gave him a strong professional foundation. His music is known for its rich imagination and delicate style.
