Elizabeth Turner was an English composer and singer active in the first half of the eighteenth century. Her songs were quite popular during her time, and critics recognized her as an excellent soprano. She was among the earliest English women to publish a significant collection of music, which marked an important step for female composers of her era. Turner gained more fame as a performer than as a composer during her career. She often worked with the composer Boyce in various musical settings. Turner was well known for singing arias from oratorios by Handel, Thomas Arne, and Boyce. Charles Burney mentioned that she was a favored singer at the Swan and also performed at other well-known venues in London such as the Castle Tavern, Hickford’s Room, and the Great Room in Dean Street. In 1756, the London Evening Post announced her death, stating that she died in Islington. The notice praised her musical talent, saying her exceptional skill made her loss deeply felt by all who appreciated harmony and music. Though many details about her life remain unclear, she was respected both as a singer and composer during her time.
