Georg Benda was born in 1722 in Bohemia, a region now part of the Czech Republic. He was the third son of Jan Jiří Benda and Dorota Brixi, both of whom were musicians. His brother, František Benda, was a violinist. In 1742, Georg moved with his family to Berlin, where he worked as a violin player in the royal orchestra. For nearly thirty years, he served as the chapelmaster to the Duke of Gotha. In 1765, Benda traveled to Italy, where he composed Italian operas and intermezzi. However, he became well-known across Europe for his melodramas such as Ariadne auf Naxos, Medea, and Pygmalion. These works featured orchestral music that accompanied spoken words and actions. He also created several Singspiele, or song-plays, with Der Dorfjahrmarkt and Romeo und Julie being the most popular. His music influenced later composers, including W.A. Mozart. Georg Benda’s music combined different styles and forms, setting him apart in the musical world of his time. His work on melodramas was especially unique, as it involved orchestras supporting spoken dialogue rather than sung singing. This innovation helped him gain recognition in the 18th century music scene and shaped the compositions of future artists. Benda’s legacy continued through his family; his son Friedrich Ludwig Benda became a composer as well. Friedrich created music for theater, wrote cantatas, and composed various instrumental pieces, thus carrying on the musical tradition started by his father.
