Leopold Mozart is primarily known as the father and mentor of his son Wolfgang, but he was a composer of importance in his own right. His treatise setting forth his method of teaching, "A Treatise on the Fundamental Principles of Violin Playing" was widely reprinted and translated. Among his musical compositions are concerti for various instruments, symphonies, and other pieces. Leopold began intensive training of Wolfgang, whom he recognized as a genius of the rarest talent. And after 1771 he ceased composition altogether.
