Franz Xaver Chwatal

Jun 19, 1808 - Jun 24, 1879

Czech Republic

Franz Xaver Chwatal was born in Rumburg, Bohemia, which is now part of the Czech Republic. His father was an organ builder and taught him how to play the piano when he was a child. This early start helped Chwatal develop his skills in music from a young age. The environment he grew up in was closely connected to music through his family and upbringing. Between 1822 and 1832, Chwatal worked as a music teacher in Merseburg. During this time, he created most of his musical compositions. This decade was important for his career as both a teacher and composer, allowing him to focus on making music while sharing his knowledge with students. His work in Merseburg marked the main period of his creative output. Starting in 1835, Chwatal took on the role of a music teacher in Magdeburg. This change in location marked a new chapter in his teaching career. While there is no detailed information about his activities during this time, it shows he continued to be involved in music education beyond his main composing years. His life remained centered on teaching music in different places.
