Georg Christoph Wagenseil was an Austrian composer, organist, and music theorist. He was born in Vienna and studied at the University of Vienna and the Jesuit College. He became a well-known musician in Vienna, and his compositions were performed in many of the city's churches and theaters. Wagenseil is perhaps best known for his keyboard works, including sonatas and concertos for harpsichord and organ. He also composed chamber music, symphonies, and operas. In addition to his work as a composer, Wagenseil was a respected music theorist and wrote several treatises on harmony and counterpoint. Wagenseil was highly regarded by his contemporaries, including composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who both admired his music. However, his music fell out of favor after his death, and it was not until the 20th century that his work was rediscovered and his contributions to classical music were recognized.
