Moritz Moszkowski was a German composer, pianist, and teacher who was well known during his life but is less remembered today. He was born in Breslau, which is now called Wrocław in Poland. From a young age, Moszkowski showed strong talent on the piano and started composing music when he was a teenager. He studied music at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik and later with Louis Diémer, a famous pianist and composer, in Paris. Although he was highly respected as a pianist and composer during his lifetime, his music became less popular after he died. Moszkowski composed many kinds of music, including pieces for piano, orchestra, and small musical groups. His piano music was especially popular and often designed for very skilled performers. Some of his best-known works are the Spanish Dances, Op. 12, known for their strong technical demands, Étincelles, Op. 36 No. 6, which is charming and melodic, and the Piano Concerto in E major, Op. 59, which is rich and romantic. His music is known for its beautiful melodies, demanding piano parts, and interesting harmonies. Besides composing and performing, Moszkowski was also a respected piano teacher. He taught at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik and later at the Neue Akademie der Tonkunst in Berlin. Many of his students went on to become composers themselves, such as Joaquín Rodrigo and Philipp Jarnach. Although his music was less played after his death, recent years have seen a new interest in his works, with some musicians and experts encouraging people to reconsider his role among Romantic composers.
