Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a German musician and composer from the Classical period. He was the fifth child and the second surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach and Maria Barbara Bach. As a member of the Bach family, he grew up with strong musical influences around him. His work reflects his deep connection to his family’s musical heritage and traditions. C. P. E. Bach was an important composer during a time when music was changing. He worked between the old Baroque style of his father and the newer Classical style that came after. His music was known for being lively and full of energy, which was different from the more delicate and easygoing gallant style popular then. This made his work stand out as powerful and expressive. To avoid confusion with his brother Johann Christian Bach, who was called the "London Bach" because of his role as music master to the Queen of England, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was called the "Berlin Bach" when he lived in Berlin. Later, after he took over as Kapellmeister from Telemann in Hamburg, he became known as the "Hamburg Bach." These nicknames helped people tell the brothers apart based on where they worked.
