About this piece
The siciliana, also known as siciliano, is a musical style from the Baroque period, often found as a part of larger musical compositions. It is played in a slow 6/8 or 12/8 time with gentle, swaying rhythms, resembling a slow gigue or tarantella. Typically, it is in a minor key, giving it a somewhat melancholic feel. The siciliana was commonly used for arias in Baroque operas and as a movement in instrumental pieces. While loosely connected to Sicily, it conveys a pastoral mood and is recognized by its distinctive dotted rhythms, setting it apart within the broader musical genre of the pastorale.
This piece is a piano arrangement by pianist Wilhelm Kempff from the second movement of Bach's Flute Sonata in Eb.
