Beethoven initially intended to compose all three sonatas consecutively, and when he had finished the first he told the publisher that he was now working on the other two "without delay". The second movement is a stormy one in a minor key, though with a contrasting middle section. It is allegedly based on two folk songs, although that is not clear in any of Beethoven’s sketches.
