About this piece
Harlequin is the name of a well-known Italian comic theater character that is generally identified by his checkered costume. His role is that of a light-hearted, nimble, and astute servant, often acting to thwart the plans of his master, and pursuing his own love interest with wit and resourcefulness. Harlequin is a typical figure of the Carnival, a festive season that occurs before the liturgical season of Lent.
In Beach's collection called "Children's Carnival" each piece is dedicated to a specific character, depicting its main traits with music.
