"Woodland sketches" is a suite of tone poems that have survived as MacDowell's best-known work. Written when the composer was reflecting and interpreting the natural beauty surrounding his Peterborough summer home. "From an Indian Lodge" has a gloomy character accentuated by the tremolo on the left hand. The challenge for the right hand is in highlighting the melodic nuances with octaves and using as little pedal as possible.
