Beethoven initially intended to compose all three sonatas consecutively, and when he had finished the first he told the publisher that he was now working on the other two "without delay". The opening theme of the Opus 110 is marked ‘con amabilità’ (‘with amiability’), and the whole movement is gentle and moderately paced. Even the central development section, so often a place for changes to remote keys, is calm and relaxed, and remains near the home key, although the recapitulation shifts briefly to E major, recalling the key of the previous sonata.
