Chopin's Op. 55 is a set of two nocturnes written between 1842 and 1844, and published in August 1844. Chopin dedicated them to his pupil and admirer Mademoiselle Jane Stirling. The first nocturne in this set alternates between a very calm and steady main section and a more turbulent and passionate middle section. The dotted rhythm in the main theme gives it a noble character, reminiscent of Mazurkas.
