Boulanger never gave a name to these three little pieces, and they were never published during her lifetime. These miniatures were written while meeting with her sister Lili Boulanger in Rome in June of 1914. The artistic quality of these short pieces is astounding, exploring a wide range of sonorities and moods using minimal resources. The third piece explores a much more daring harmonic world, with chromatic harmonies loosely bound to D just by the repeated notes in the right hand. Phrasing the long and almost atonal musical lines is quite a challenge, while keeping the right hand notes very smooth and even.
