Boulanger never gave a name to these three little pieces, and they were never published during her lifetime. These miniatures were written while meeting with her sister Lili Boulanger in Rome in June of 1914. The artistic quality of these short pieces is astounding, exploring a wide range of sonorities and moods using minimal resources. The second piece has a much more dramatic and serious character than the first. Phrasing is a challenge in this piece, given the size and expressiveness of the musical lines.
