Maria del Carmen Perez Jimenez Barradas was a Uruguayan pianist, composer, and choir teacher who made a lasting impact on music. She was born in Montevideo to Spanish parents, Santos Rojas and Antonio Pérez Giménez Barradas, who was a still life painter. She began her musical studies with Antonio Frank, but her education was briefly paused after her father died in 1898. Supported by friends and family, she continued at the Conservatorio del Uruguay and earned her diploma in 1915. Inspired by her brother, the painter Rafael Barradas, she chose the stage name Carmen Barradas to shape her own musicalidentity. After World War I, Carmen Barradas and her family moved to Spain in 1916. Though they faced money problems, with her mother making toys to help support them, Carmen got involved in Barcelona's artistic world as a composer. In 1917, she held a concert featuring her own works, which helped start her career in both Spain and Uruguay. She returned to Montevideo in 1928, where she taught at the Institutos Normales and published a children's magazine called Andresillo. Despite challenges and some doubt about her music style in Uruguay, she kept pushing creative limits until she died in 1963. Her music, known for being creative and fresh, included pieces like "Fabricación," "Andaluza," "La niña de la mantilla blanca," "Aserradero," "Taller Mecánico," "En el molino y Procesión," "Aurora en la enramada," "Mar-Tragedia-Misterio," and "Estudios tonales." While her experimental style was not popular in her lifetime, pianist and musicologist Néffer Kröger helped keep her music alive by preserving and performing about 170 of her manuscripts. These works continue to show Carmen Barradas' innovative musical ideas.
