About the composer
Selbourne Oswald Alfred Russell, also known as Oswald (Ossie) Russell, was born on August 16, 1933, in Kingston, Jamaica. Showing musical talent at an early age, he began playing the piano at three and went on to pursue formal music studies, achieving high academic success. Russell's musical journey started at the Royal Academy of Music in London, followed by studies in Paris and enrollment at The Juilliard School in New York City. With a strong education, he returned to Jamaica in 1962, playing a significant role in shaping Jamaican musical identity. Throughout his career, Russell achieved notable success, performing in prestigious venues, receiving awards for his piano playing, and composing works such as Jamaican Dances. In 1964, he moved to Switzerland, where he garnered further recognition and expanded his musical repertoire. Beyond his musical accomplishments, Russell married Danielle in 1971, and together they embraced family life and engaged in the cultural scene of Geneva.
