Selbourne Oswald Alfred Russell, often called Oswald or Ossie Russell, was born on August 16, 1933, in Kingston, Jamaica. He showed an early gift for music and started playing piano when he was only three years old. Russell pursued formal music education with great dedication. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, continued in Paris, and later attended The Juilliard School in New York City. After completing his studies, he returned to Jamaica in 1962, where he helped shape the country’s musical identity. Russell had a successful career as a pianist and composer. He performed at well-known venues and won awards for his piano playing. Some of his musical works include Jamaican Dances. In 1964, he moved to Switzerland, where he gained more recognition and broadened his musical style. Russell married Danielle in 1971, and they shared a family life while staying involved in Geneva’s cultural community. Even though he faced health struggles and had surgeries in 1982, he kept composing and teaching music. He continued to work on music until his last piece in 2009. Russell passed away on July 2, 2012. His work left a lasting mark on music and had a deep impact on people who knew him. Throughout his life, he was admired for his talent, dedication, and contributions to the musical world. His journey took him from Jamaica to some of the world’s greatest music institutions and cultural hubs.
