Bonis's Opus 103 is an excellent collection of short character studies for elementary/beginner level pianists. They gradually increase in difficulty and are a good introduction to basic piano techniques. The A minor key in "The Little Beggar" certainly evokes a sad and lonely character. This is an excellent piece for elementary level pianists who are starting to play with hands together and working on balance. Another challenge in this piece is to project longer melodic lines on the right-hand, where each phrase is 4 measures long (quite a lot for this level).
