Tchaikovsky selected 8 numbers from the Nutcracker to be performed as an orchestral concert before the the ballet premiered in December 1982. While this concert suite was an instant hit, the now iconic ballet was not received well during its first years. Given the success of the concert suite, the composer later transcribed those 8 movements for the piano.
