The "tree cycle" is one of the finest examples of the composer's sensitive, poetic writings: "the trees speak" to him. This is one of Sibelius' most famous piano works. The lack of a clear tonal center gives this piece its endless sense of wonder. The contrast of texture is used to great effect, with the steady main theme composed of half notes mixed with tremolo-like passages.
