The "tree cycle" is one of the finest examples of the composer's sensitive, poetic writings: "the trees speak" to him. This is one of Sibelius' most famous piano works. This is the most vivid piece in this set, opening with brilliant broken chords that lead the way to a simple melody played over an ostinato pattern on the left hand. This type of accompaniment evokes feelings of folklore and of events that took place long ago.
