Szymanowska's two nocturnes exemplify early pianistic poetry. The first, “Le Murmure”, became one of her most popular compositions. The patterns on the right and left hands create a hemiola, a subtle rhythmic alteration in which six equal notes may be heard as two groups of three or three groups of two. This rhythmic ambiguity and the drive created by the relentless 16th notes on the right hand make this music captivating and a greta example of early romantic pianistic style.
