Liszt published many transcriptions in the 1860s, including the famous Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem in D minor. This transcription is very pianistic and Liszt uses the full range of the modern piano to highlight the dramatic nature of this music. Keeping the melodic lines moving forward and avoiding verticality within such a rich texture is the main challenge in this piece.
