With his “Lyric Pieces”, Edvard Grieg was writing a kind of poetic piano diary: between 1867 and 1901 he composed 66 short character pieces, published in ten books. Alongside some fairly virtuosic music there are also numerous simpler dances and melodies that can be played at an early stage. "Watchman's song" is defined by two different sections, the main melody is serious and solid, characterized by block chords and unison melody while the intermezzo is lyric and mysterious. Here the composer adds a note, almost a subtitle, that reads "ghosts of the night". This piece wants to represent a person's confidence during the day and the unease at night.
