2. Andante

Luís Freitas Branco

About the composer
Luís Maria da Costa de Freitas Branco was a distinguished Portuguese composer, musicologist, and music professor who played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of Portuguese music during the first half of the 20th century. Born into an aristocratic family in Lisbon with historical ties to the royal family, Branco received a cosmopolitan education and studied music in Berlin and Paris, collaborating with notable composers such as Engelbert Humperdinck. In 1916, Branco assumed the position of a composition professor at the Lisbon Conservatory of Music, where he significantly contributed to the restructuring of musical education. His influence extended to notable students, including Joly Braga Santos. Despite facing political challenges in the 1930s, leading to his retirement in 1939, Branco continued his musical journey, composing and researching Portuguese early music until his death at the age of 65 in Lisbon. His enduring impact on Portuguese music and dedication to preserving the nation's musical heritage solidify his legacy as a key figure in the country's cultural and artistic history.
