James Hook was an English composer and organist born in Norwich in 1746. He showed musical talent at a very young age and was already performing in public by the time he was six years old. In the 1760s, he moved to London, where he quickly became known as a skilled organist and composer. He worked at popular spots such as White Conduit House and Marylebone Gardens, building his reputation in the city. Throughout his career, Hook held several organist positions, including at St. John's in Bermondsey and Vauxhall Gardens. At Vauxhall Gardens, he composed a variety of music, including operas and vocal pieces, and also worked as a teacher. He often collaborated with his family, with his wife and sons writing librettos for the operas he composed for theaters like Drury Lane and Covent Garden. One of Hook's most famous operas was Tekeli, created during his time working at Vauxhall Gardens. He stopped working there in 1820 and later moved to Boulogne, France. James Hook died there in 1827, marking the end of his long career in music.
