About the composer
Johann Friedrich Burgmüller was born in Ratisbon, which is now called Regensburg, Germany. Music ran in his family, as both his father, Friedrich August Burgmüller, and his younger brother, Norbert Burgmüller, were composers too. This background likely influenced his path in music from a young age.
In 1829, Burgmüller moved to Kassel to study with Ludwig Spohr and Moritz Hauptmann. He gave his first piano concert there on January 14, 1830. This marked the beginning of his public career as a pianist and composer, showing his talent on stage.
At age 26, in 1832, Friedrich settled in Paris and remained there until his death. His brother Norbert planned to join him in Paris in 1835, but sadly Norbert died in a drowning accident a year later. In Paris, Friedrich embraced the local music scene and developed a light, stylish way of playing. He composed many piano pieces for salons and published several collections, including piano études designed for children. He passed away in Paris in 1874.
