This invention explores simple musical ideas in very creative ways. The main theme is made up of scales in contrary motion but played "out of sync" between hands, a rhythmic displacement technique called syncopation. The sections we hear between themes are called episodes, and in these parts, we have broken chords in contrary motion, instead of scales. Another interesting feature of this music is how Bach reuses the playful sixteenth-note idea that closed the main theme but now plays a much more relevant role in the episodes.
