Originally entitled La Montagnarde, this piece evokes the rustic character of mountain life through its open 5th accompaniment in the left hand, a sonority reminiscent of bagpipes. This drone-like texture, often associated with Scottish highland music, lends the piece its pastoral color and explains why English editions sometimes call it The Highlander.
