Burgmüller Op. 109 is a wonderful collection of small character studies. Each piece presents a consistent technical problem, which is often the main idea of the piece, while at the same time having a distinct and lovely musical appeal. "Song of the gondolier" features a sweet and tender melody reminiscent of the Venician boatman riding his boat around the city canals. The piece is marked by a cantabile, the main challenge is to perform with a smooth singing style.
