2. Andante con Espressione Op.202

Heinrich Lichner

About the composer
Heinrich Lichner was a German composer known for creating many pieces, especially simple piano works designed for students. He was born in Harpersdorf, Silesia. His compositions include sonatinas such as Op. 4, 49, and 66. These sonatinas are written in a clear and smooth classical style. At times, the harmony in these pieces shows some influence from the romantic style. Besides composing, Lichner had important roles in music as a director and organist. He worked as an organist at the church of the 11,000 virgins. During part of his life, he also served as the director of a choral festival in Breslau. His career combined both performance and leadership in music events. Lichner’s sonatinas remain popular as teaching pieces because they are accessible to students while retaining musical interest. His work reflects a balance between classical clarity and some romantic touches in harmony. He died in Breslau, where he spent some time directing musical activities. His contributions to piano teaching and church music make him remembered today.
