Chopin's 24 Preludes, Op. 28, are a set of pieces for the piano, one in each of the twenty-four keys. Chopin wrote them in Majorca (Spanish island in the Mediterranean), where he spent the winter with George Sand and her children to escape the damp Paris weather. This prelude is probably the most famous of the collection. The piece has an overall sense of despair, in fact, Chopin's last dynamic marking in the piece is smorzando, which means "dying away". This piece was played at the composer's funeral on the organ. Chopin did not publish any textual names for his preludes, however, pianists Alfred Cortot and Hans von Bülow created nicknames, respectively "Above a grave" and "Suffocation".
