late intermediate

1. Presto Hob XVI:34

Joseph Haydn

What's this piece like?
Haydn wrote this sonata at a time when the piano was beginning to replace the harpsichord, giving composers new ways to play with sound and expression. This sonata could be performed on either instrument. The first movement is both gentle and dramatic, with a surprisingly serious mood for Haydn. Short musical ideas appear and begin to develop, only to be interrupted by unexpected pauses. Just when the music seems ready to move forward, Haydn brings it to a sudden stop. The result is a movement full of tension, subtle details, and unexpected turns.
Who's this piece for?
This is a great piece for intermediate level pianists with a solid foundation and strong technique.
